Hamptons International Film Festival
Pierce Brosnan mingled during happy hour and Cheryl Hines hung out at the Hedges Inn as the 17th annual Hamptons International Film Festival launched its five-day run Thursday. Brosnan, making his third appearance at the festival, talked about his role as a grieving father in "The Greatest," the festival's opening-night film, which also stars Susan Sarandon and rising young actress Carey Mulligan ("An Education," released Friday). The filmmakers wanted Sarandon to co-star, Brosnan said at the bar of the East Hampton hotel c/o The Maidstone. "So I called her. Left a message on her machine, actually. I said, 'Come on, why not? What else have you got going on?' She said, 'You had me at why not.' "
At The Hedges Inn nearby, Hines, a star of HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," promoted her directorial debut, "Serious Moonlight," due for release Dec. 4, which screened yesterday afternoon. The comedy-drama, written by the late Adrienne Shelly (who cast Hines in her 2007 indie hit "Waitress"), stars Meg Ryan as a woman who duct-tapes her cheating husband, played by Timothy Hutton, to a toilet bowl.
