ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) -Seven former or defending Breeders' Cup champions will compete during racing's richest weekend at Santa Anita.Curlin, the reigning Horse of the Year, tops that list and will try for a second consecutive win in the $5 million Classic against some of the world's top horses.
SAFETY FIRST: Santa Anita and the Breeders' Cup have developed extensive safety and emergency procedures to assist horses who become sick or injured this weekend.
Chief veterinarian Rick Arthur will be assisted by an international team of 11 veterinarians who will evaluate every Breeders' Cup entry for overall health and soundness.On the morning before they run, each Breeders' Cup horse will receive an extensive pre-race examination, including observation of the horse in motion.
In the event of an injury during a race, three onsite equine ambulances will have an emergency team of veterinarians. Any horse with a serious injury will be transported to the equine hospital on the Santa Anita backstretch for evaluation and treatment.STAR POWER: With the Breeders' Cup so close to Hollywood, a strong contingent of celebrities is expected for the championship weekend.
It starts Thursday night with a charity bash at the Hollywood Palladium headlined by Maroon 5, with music spun by Joel Madden.Other star sightings could include actor Pierce Brosnan
